MOSCOW — World War Z star Brad Pitt says there is “plenty more material to mine” from the zombie novel by Max Brooks on which the movie is based, suggesting that rumors of a trilogy might be true.
Pitt, who was in Moscow for the 35th edition of the Moscow International Film Festival — which opened Thursday with a gala screening of World War Z — would not comment on whether he would appear in sequels to Marc Forster‘s film but said the movie had “barely got a fraction of the book in.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter as Russian journalists jostled for position on the fringes of the red carpet at Moscow’s Rossiya Cinema situated on the Russian capital’s famous Pushkin Square, Pitt said he and Angelina Jolie‘s children Maddox, 11, and Pax, 9, had “seen the movie and loved it.”

Pitt says his character, United Nations employee Gerry Lane, who flies around the world to combat a zombie pandemic that threatens to destroy humanity, is no superhero.
“He’s a normal guy who finds out that every country is affected and no one knows what to do,” the actor said.
As Pitt explained it, the zombie genre is popular today because “It’s about a pandemic; a kind of run-for-your-life movie.”
When asked about World War Z sequels, the actor was hopeful: “There is enough to mine from the book. We could barely get a fraction of the book in. So we’ll see. We’ll see.”
Forster wasn’t as candid on the subject of sequels, though the film’s ending sees Pitt’s character referencing unfinished business, characterizing the worldwide war against the zombies as “just beginning.”
Forster said the producers wanted to gauge the success of the film before committing to sequels. “Let’s see how this goes. We hope this movie goes well, and we shall go from there,” he said.
As for Pitt’s involvement in the potential follow-ups, Forster said, “Hopefully, but let’s see how things go.”
Other stars on Moscow’s red carpet Thursday night included festival president and Oscar-winning director Nikita Mihalkov and spy-turned-media-and-soft porn star Anna Chapman, who was deported from the U.S. in July 2010 in a spy swap with Russia. The auburn-haired Chapman wore a figure-hugging black velvet gown for her red-carpet appearance.
