NEW YORK — Cherry Jones has committed to star in Manhattan Theatre Club’s off-Broadway world premiere next year of Sarah Treem‘s play When We Were Young and Unafraid.
The production will be directed by Pam MacKinnon, a Tony nominee this season for her work on the latest revival of Edward Albee‘s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It will begin previews May 22, 2014, at New York City Center Stage I, with an official opening set for June 17.
That venue is where Jones originated her 2005 Tony-winning role as Sister Aloysius in John Patrick Shanley‘s Doubt before it transferred to Broadway. The actress also won a Tony in 1995 for her lead role in The Heiress as well as a 2009 Emmy for supporting actress in a drama series for her role as U.S. President Allison Taylor in 24.
In Treem’s new drama, set in the early 1970s as the feminist movement was gaining traction, Jones will play Agnes, whose bed and breakfast has become an underground shelter for abused women. But when a young runaway begins having a profound influence on Agnes’ teenage daughter, she is forced to examine her own attitudes to the people she is trying to help.
In addition to her theater credits, Treem has worked as a writer and producer on HBO’s How to Make It in America and In Treatment and Netflix’s House of Cards. She has a new pilot, The Affair, in production at Showtime.
Before Treem’s play, Jones will return to Broadway in the fall in a transfer of the American Repertory Theatre’s revival of Tennessee Williams‘ The Glass Menagerie, in which she stars opposite Zachary Quinto and Celia Keenan-Bolger. Directed by John Tiffany (Once), that production plays a limited engagement, beginning performances Sept. 5.
Additional cast and creative team for When We Were Young and Unfraid are to be announced.
