TORONTO — Canadian distributor Mongrel Media has opened its wallet yet again in Cannes, this time buying the Canadian rights to Abdellatif Kechiche‘s coming-of-age lesbian tale Blue is the Warmest Color.
The Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos-starrer will have its world premiere in competition at Cannes on May 23.
Earlier on the Croisette, Mongrel Media bought Joel Coen and Ethan Coen‘s Inside Llewyn Davis for Canada ahead of its world premiere Sunday night in competition.
Mongrel Media will open Blue is the Warmest Color in 2014.
The picture is inspired by Julie Maroh‘s comic book Le Bleu Est une Couleur Chaude. Kechiche and Ghalya Lacroix wrote the script.
Kechiche earned a Cesar for his 2008 film The Secret of the Grain and another for Games of Love and Chance.
Mongrel plans a limited Dec. 20, 2013 release of the Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan-starrer Inside Llewyn Davis ahead of a wider Canadian release in January 2014.
The Coen Brothers’ folk-music drama is set to roll out stateside on December 6, 2013 via CBS Films, with an expansion from December 20.
Set in 1960 in New York’s Greenwich Village, the film tells the story of Isaac, who plays a singer loosely based on the local hero Dave Van Ronk. s
