Undefeated producer Ed Cunningham is turning his attention to the strange case of an amputated foot for his next documentary.
The producer, whose credits also include Seth Gordon‘s The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, announced production on Finders Keepers and is launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the final stages of physical production as well as post-production.
Cunningham, who also announces college football for ESPN, will produce through his World Record Headquarters shingle and has put together a team that includes director Bryan Carberry and indie producer Adam Gibbs.
With more than 50 hours of footage already shot, Finders Keepers chronicles the story of a severed human foot that is found in a grill bought at a 2007 auction in rural North Carolina and unveils the people at the center of the widely publicized and outrageous custody battle that ensued between the amputee and the grill’s purchaser over ownership of the foot.
The 30-day Kickstarter campaign is looking to raise $80,000.
“From the moment I first heard the story, it reminded me immediately of The King of Kong, as it was two very different men colliding in these very bizarre circumstances, and we were lucky enough to candidly document them as their sometimes difficult lives became intertwined,” Cunningham said. “But the idea of being able to finish this as a feature-length documentary had died until Bryan Carberry called and asked if we could try to finish it.”
Cunningham first heard about this story while on assignment for ESPN and has a knack for finding off-the-beaten-path storylines. He and Gordon discovered the story that led to the production and 2007 release of King of Kong, which was sold to New Line.
Cunningham’s feature documentary credits include New York Doll (also produced with Gordon) and Make Believe, which followed six of the world’s best young magicians as they battle for the title of Teen World Champ.
Carberry previously worked with Cunningham on Make Believe and has directed videos for Scott Weiland and Adriano Goldschmied. Finders Keepers marks Carberry’s first feature film. Gibbs recently finished production on the film Lucky Them, starring Toni Collette and Thomas Haden Church.
