On a basic level, it’s an idea that seems like simple math: The Kingdom Hearts video game franchise is based around the idea of Final Fantasy characters facing off against familiar Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. These days, however, Disney owns a couple of other companies with fan-favorite characters some might want to see join in the fun. So is the notion of Sephiroth facing off against Darth Vader or Iron Man a possibility now that Disney controls Star Wars and The Avengers?
Apparently, that very question was one of the first things Tetsuya Nomura, director of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III, was asked. During an interview with French Final Fantasy website Finaland, Nomura revealed that those involved with the Kingdom Hearts series have “been talking about Star Wars itself since it became Disney’s content recently,” adding: “When I heard the news I was like, ‘Wow! Wow!’ ”
“Of course it would be great if we could add those licenses,” Nomura said when asked about the possibility of seeing either Star Wars or Marvel characters in future editions of the game. However, he went on, “There are lots of rules and restrictions by Disney, so we can’t actually put everything people want.”
You don’t have to lose all hope if your heart was set on seeing Sora and Darth Maul go head to head for a Keyblade/Lightsaber clash, however. Nomura teased that his team is “gonna prepare some surprises for you, so just wait for the information.”
