CANNES – Alanis Morissette has been cast in The Price of Desire, a project about architect and designer Eileen Gray that is also tapping into the current Kickstarter craze.
The partners on Saturday also said in a statement released here that Shannyn Sossamon has been cast in the lead role. She will play Gray, with Swiss actor Vincent Perez playing her Swiss/French nemesis Le Corbusier, who she falls in love with. Canadian actress and singer Morissette will play Gray’s lover Marisa Damia.
The plot focuses on the relationship between Gray and Le Corbusier and how it affected the evolution of modern architecture.
Mary McGuckian is directing the film, with her EG Film Productions Ltd., Lightstream Pictures and Saga Film producing.
The Irish-Belgian co-production will be distributed by Entertainment One in Canada.
The production has also launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the restoration of Gray’s E1027 Villa in Roquebrune Cap Martin, where part of the movie will be filmed. It is set to open to the public after the completion of principle photography, producers said.
“Eileen Gray’s evolution as an artist to recognition as a major influence on a century of minimalist and modernist design and architecture has resonance and relevance today,” said Lightstream producer Garrett Kelleher.
“Eileen Gray’s right to be recognized as one of the most influential designers of the modern era may no longer be in dispute following the recent retrospective of her work at The Pompidou, but the insidious chauvinism to which her legacy was subjected in her lifetime is a salutary tale to all visual artists of the female gender,” said McGuckian.
