Two recent theatrical hits, both new on disc, bowed in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the national home video sales charts the week ending May 12.
On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, the romantic drama Safe Haven, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, rode its $71.3 million domestic theatrical gross to a first-place finish, with the Paramount actioner Jack Reacher ($80 million), with Tom Cruise, bowing at No. 2.
On Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week, the order was switched: Jack Reacher debuted at No. 1, with Safe Haven – which stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough – at No. 2.

Nielsen data shows that Jack Reacher generated 49 percent of its first-week unit sales from the Blu-ray Disc version, while in Safe Haven’s sake the Blu-ray haul was just 29 percent.
Overall, according to Nielsen data, Jack Reacher sold 67% as many units as Safe Haven did in the two titles’ first week in stores.
Anchor Bay’s Silver Linings Playbook, the top seller the previous week on both charts, slipped to No. 3 on First Alert and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, behind Universal Studios’ Mama, a horror film executive produced by Guillermo del Toro that earned $71.6 million in U.S. theaters. Mama debuted at No. 4 on First Alert and generated 37% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.
Elsewhere on the home video sales charts, Warner’s Superman Unbound – a DC Universe Animated Original Movie – debuted at No. 7 and Fringe: The Complete Fifth and Final Season bowed at No. 15.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, Jack Reacher debuted at No. 1, bumping the previous week’s top rental, Silver Linings Playbook, to No. 2.
Neither Safe Haven nor Mama made it onto the top 20 rental chart, as their respective studios, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios, don’t ship product to many rental outlets until 28 days after street date in a bid to halt cannibalization of consumer purchases.
The Universal Studios comedy A Haunted House entered the top 20 at No. 7.
Also new to the rental top 20 are Sony Pictures’ Steel Magnolias at No. 14 and DreamWorks’ Dragons: Riders of Berk at No. 15.
