Troops rehearse war (but don’t mention Putin)

Britain is planning to conduct multiple Cold War-style tank exercises in Poland next year after escalating tensions with Russia over Ukraine, the head of the army said yesterday.

General Sir Nicholas Carter said that training with heavy armour and infantry alongside Polish forces helped to reassure Britain’s allies in Eastern Europe who had grown nervous about Moscow’s intentions in the region.

His comments came as 1,300 British soldiers — some using tanks that had to be taken out of storage in Germany — rolled across Polish fields, blasting at mock enemy fighters in the largest military exercise conducted by British forces in the country since 2008.
