Dad: More than just BBQs and Fireworks

IMG_0848I suppose this is my somewhat belated public show of appreciation for good and involved Dads everywhere. But, mainly it’s to the one that my two kids call Dad. My husband.

An amazing Dad.

And I don’t say that lightly. I know how good my kids have it.

I know that they will never really know how good they have it. Because they don’t know any different. And that’s exactly how it should be.

He’s involved. He cares. He sacrifices and puts their needs in front of his own.

I wish I could say that’s a given. But we all know that it’s not. From both my personal and professional experience, I know that great Dads are to be cherished. And sometimes, sadly, they seem to be in short supply.

So when I tweet or Facebook something funny or light hearted about Dads…like how great they are at “teaching kids to appreciate the finer things in life. Like bacon, grilling, and fireworks.” Believe me, I know a good Dad is way more than that.

My dad loved barbecuing. He loved fireworks. But he was also an alcoholic. And was not always there for me like I hoped a father would be.

I get it.

I get that some moms are doing it alone.

It’s not easy.

I’m fortunate that I can see the humor and value in everything that Dads are. Because I’m married to one who takes his Dad title seriously.

And if I could have one wish granted for every child in this world, it’s that they would have both a mother and father (or father and father or mother and mother…parents) who love them unconditionally and would do anything to be a source of love and security for them.

Thank you to all the Dads who do just that for their children.

And if you happen to love bacon, grilling, and fireworks to boot? Then…well that’s just the grand finale capping off one heck of a fireworks show.

Love this, my friend! There is so much more to “dadding” than meets the eye.
