One couldn’t blame actor Beau Bridges for appearing a bit dazed following the April 27 screening of the rarely seen film noir drama Try and Get Me at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.
Recently restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the 1950 morality tale stars his father, Lloyd Bridges, then 37, as a two-bit petty thief who commits murder when a kidnapping goes awry. At the end of the Cy Endfield film, Bridges’ character, now behind bars, acts like a crazed animal as a mob storms the jailhouse seeking to take justice into their own hands.
Beau, 71, said he hadn’t seen the film in years and never before in such pristine condition.
“He was loose,” Beau (real name: Lloyd III) told The Hollywood Reporter after the screening. With him was his wife, Wendy, and actor sons Jordan (Rizzoli & Isles) and Dylan, part of an eight-member family contingent who came to see the movie (also known as The Sound of Fury). Alexander Payne, Beau’s writer-director on The Descendants, also was in the audience of about 150 people.
But what really stunned Beau was discovering that his late mother, Dorothy, was in the film too, playing an uncredited reporter. “She had two lines,” he said, sounding amazed.
A few paces down Hollywood Boulevard, a film more familiar to Lloyd Bridges’ fans — the 1980 comedy Airplane! — was screening at the TCL Chinese Theatre at just about the same time. All this attention on his dad, who died in 1998, led Beau to recite a famous line of his father’s from that David Zucker/Jerry Zucker/Jim Abrahams classic: “Not a good week to stop sniffing glue.”
