Although Jim Carrey stars in Kick-Ass 2, it looks like the film’s promotional duties ahead of its Aug. 16 release will fall on the shoulders of Carrey’s co-star, Chloe Grace Moretz.
Carrey revealed Sunday on Twitter that he was pulling support for the Jeff Wadlow-directed action flick in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings that claimed the lives of 26 children and adults, and recharged a nationwide debate over gun violence.
“I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” he wrote, adding: “I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”
In the picture, which also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John Leguizamo and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Carrey portrays masked superhero Colonel Stars and Stripes, who joins the crime-fighting group of kids in the sequel to the popular 2010 comedy.

“I’m having a lot of fun throwing myself into these smaller parts and burying myself in the character,” the 51-year-old actor, who recently starred in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.
Carrey’s publicist declined comment. A rep for Wadlow did not immediately respond to THR‘s request for comment. Distributor Lionsgate had no immediate comment when reached by THR.
Mark Millar, who wrote the comic book on which the movie is based, responded Sunday night in a lengthy post on his website, heaping much praise upon the stretchy-faced star (“Carrey in particular is magnificent”) but also expressing surprise toward his comments.
“As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago. Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin,” said Millar.
Carrey’s upcoming films also include Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Ricky Stanicky and Dumb and Dumber To, opposite Jeff Daniels.
