Robert Redford has joined Wim Wenders‘ ambitious 3D documentary project, Cathedrals of Culture and will direct a 26-minute segment of the six-part film series about iconic buildings.
Redford, whose last feature as a director was the thriller The Company You Keep (2012), will helm the second part of the series, a look at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, which was built by the architect Louis Kahn. Redford’s Sundance Productions and @radical.media in New York will produce the segment together with Wenders’ Berlin-based shingle Neue Road Movies.
The other directors in the series are Oscar-winner James Marsh (Man on Wire), Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen (Into Eternity), Brazilian Karim Ainouz (Love for Sale) and Austrian director Michael Glawogger (Workingman’s Death).
The concept of Cathedrals of Culture is for the filmmakers to take a subjective look at an iconic building as a window into a society’s culture.
Wenders has already wrapped principle photography on his film for the series, which examines the Berlin Philharmonic. Other iconic buildings in the series include Halden Prison in Halden, Norway (Madsen), the National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia (Glawogger) and the Oslo Opera House in Oslo, Norway (Marsh).
Cathedrals of Culture will be shot in both 3D and 2D. French-German public broadcaster ARTE is a television backer on the project and plans to broadcast the series simultaneously in 3D and 2D in 2014. Selected theatrical event screenings of Cathedrals of Culture are also planned.
Wenders’ Berlin-based Neue Road Movie will co-produce Cathedrals of Culture with German public broadcaster RBB in collaboration with Arte. Co-producers include Final Cut in Copenhagen, Les Films d’Ici 2 in Paris, Toyko’s Wowow and Lotus Film in Vienna in association with Sundance Productions and @radical.media in New York.
