The Los Angeles Film Festival has named David O. Russell as guest director of this year’s festival, set for June 13-23 in downtown L.A.
Russell, now working on American Hustle (which suspended filming in the Boston area due to a citywide manhunt for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings), also will receive the Spirit of Independence award.
As guest director of the festival, Russell will host a screening of Three Kings and a discussion about his work. He also will attend the 12th annual filmmaker retreat at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Calif.
Russell came on to the scene with his debut feature Spanking the Monkey, which earned him two Film Independent Spirit Awards. He has since directed films such as Flirting With Disaster, Three Kings, the seven-time Oscar nominee The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, which snagged eight Academy Award noms, two Indie Spirit Awards and a BAFTA.
American Hustle is scheduled for a December release and stars Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner.
Previous guest directors at the festival include Kathryn Bigelow, William Friedkin and Guillermo del Toro.
This year will feature a session with David Mamet and Ricky Jay as well as an evening with director Costa-Gavras.
