PARIS – As physical DVD sales continue to fall in France, the VOD market is expected to grow 17 percent in 2013, according to a study released Wednesday by international market research firm GfK conducted for French television station TF1.
In France, VOD has shown steady growth in sales, up from $140.5 million (€105 million) in 2010, $218 million (€163 million) in 2011, to $255.7 million (€191 million) in 2012, with sales expected to reach $290.5 million (€217 million) this year. The report also showed that television screens are the favored method of delivery at 74 percent, compared to 17 percent for laptops and just two percent for tablets.

TF1 has their own premium VOD service MYTF1VOD, which offers several popular American series such as The Mentalist and Grey’s Anatomy the day after their U.S. broadcast, a service aimed at stopping illegal downloads before the shows are aired in France. Several movies are available for rent as well, such as the popular Gerard Depardieu comedies in the Asterix and Obelix series. Films rent for €4.99-€5.99 ($6.68-$8.02) and an episode of a TV program rents for €1.99 ($2.67).
Aside from TF1, pay-TV giant Canal Plus has had success with CanalPlay and CanalPlay Infinity, and DailyMotion has launched a VOD channel for children and is exploring additional outlets. Amazon’s LoveFilm and Netflix were expected to enter the market this year, but have pushed back launches until early 2014.

A previous study from GFK released earlier this month, also showed that the SVOD market grew 22 percent in the first four months of 2013, compared to the same time period in 2012. However SVOD remains smaller than single-purchase VOD transactions with just $34.8 million (€26 million) in revenue in 2012, a 10 percent market share for the year.
Sales of DVDs and Blu-Rays declined 8.7 percent in the first three months of 2013.
