ROME – The second edition of the Venice Film Festival’s Biennale College cinema initiative will open for submissions next week, officials said Friday, offering another chance for up-and-coming filmmakers to compete for a €150,000 ($195,000) film budget and a chance to have their finished product screen at the 2014 edition of the world’s oldest film festival.
The second edition of Biennale College is opening before the first has produced its final results. Last year, in the inaugural edition, some 43 projects from 77 countries were submitted. A total of 15 semifinalists were selected from that group in December, with each participating in a workshop in Venice before the group was culled to three in January.
Those three film projects — Memphis, from U.S.-based director Tim Sutton and producer John Baker; The Year of June from Thailand’s Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit and Aditya Assarat; and Yuri Esposito from Italy’s Alessio Fava and Max Chicco — are currently in production with the benefit of the initiative’s cash awards and advice from expert professionals. All three will screen at this year’s edition of the Venice festival, which will take place August 28-Sept. 7.
Applications for the second edition can be submitted online starting next Wednesday and until July 10. As with the freshman edition last year, participation is open to teams of directors and producers. The director must be making his or her first or second film, while the producer must have produced three short films that either garnered distribution deals or made it onto the festival circuit.
Instead of 15 semifinalists as was the case last year, the group will number an even dozen this time around.
