LONDON – Monty Python star John Cleese has called British newspapers “amoral” and “depraved.”
The comedian criticized U.K. media outlets in a video interview with The Guardian that was part of a promotional tour for his new animated Disney movie, Planes.
The Guardian said it would post the video interview on its website on Thursday. But a preview post online said that during the chat, Cleese said Twitter and other social media have made him less dependent on newspapers to promote his work.
According to the the paper, the actor excluded the staffs of The Independent, The Daily Mirror and The Guardian itself from his criticism.
“The rest are the most appalling, depraved, disgusting, amoral creatures you could find anywhere outside of prison,” the paper quoted Cleese as saying. “And of course many of them are going to be inside a prison soon.”
That seemed to be a reference to Rupert Murdoch‘s The Sun, which has seen a slew of staffers questioned as part of a probe into payments for news tips and information.
