ROME – The Locarno Film Festival will this year become the fifth European film festival to award the Europa Cinemas Label, festival organizers announced Friday.
Created ten years ago, the Europa Cinemas Label uses a jury formed by member exhibitors to select the best European film in the “discovery” section of major film festivals. Starting this year, European fare screening in competition in Locarno or in the festival’s Filmmakers of the Present sidebar will be eligible for the prize, joining films in Cannes’ Quinzaine des Realisateurs sidebar, the Venice Days event at the Venice Film Festival, Berlin’s Panorama section, and the East of the West sidebar and main competition at the Karlovy Vary festival.
Films awarded the prestigious honor receive support from the Europa Cinemas Network, including promotion backing and incentives for exhibitors to run the film.
“The Europa Cinemas Label is about encouraging and supporting new talent,” Fatima Djoumer, Europa Cinemas head of international relations, said. “The Locarno Film festival is an energetic and ambitious festival that is committed to the same goal.”
Added Nadia Dresti, Locarno’s head of international activities: This collaboration is one more step in the direction of creating a 360-degree platform for considerations and actions focused toward sale and distribution of films.”
This year’s edition of the picturesque Swiss festival, the 66th, will take place August 7-17.
