MOSCOW — Trudno byt Bogom (Hard to Be a God), the long-awaited final picture by renowned director Aleksei German, who died in February at age 74, is to be released in Russia this fall.
“The original image has been cleaned and computer graphic work has been completed,” Aleksei German Jr., the director’s son, told the Russian daily Vedomosti. “Work on color correction has started.”

German Jr. is overseeing the completion of the film with his mother, German Sr.’s widow, screenwriter Svetlana Karmalita. He added that work on the film is going as scheduled.
According to German Jr., most of the creative decisions were made by his father. “The picture is moving in the direction he chose,” he said. “[We are working] from his notes, directions, desires and will, and that is the most important.”
German Sr. worked on the film, which is based on the 1963 Russian science fiction novel of the same name by Arkady and Boris Srugatsky, since 1999. The film is widely expected to become the director’s magnum opus.
German Jr., himself an established director, interrupted work on his next project, Pod Elektricheskimi Oblakami (Under Electric Skies), to complete his father’s film.
