Could Andrew McCarthy have filled Matthew Broderick‘s shoes?
In a new clip from Funny or Die, part of its Hollywood Agent Voice Mails series, the actor laments about wanting to “tell stories about the times we live in” while his (phony) agent insists that Richard Donner‘s Ladyhawke will turn McCarthy into an “above-the-title movie star.”
“I do need an answer on Ladyhawke right now. This is what we have been waiting for, pal. Rutger [Hauer] turns into a wolf by night, Michelle [Pfeiffer] turns into a hawk by day, and you turn into an above-the-title movie star by October,” Warren Klein, a fictional ’80s power agent, says in the voicemail.

“Nobody wants to hear actors talking to birds in some mystical, faraway land, Warren,” McCarthy retorts. “Come on.”
McCarthy follows fellow ’80s heartthrobs Kirk Cameron, Rob Lowe and Christian Slater in the spoof series, poking fun at the love/hate relationships between insecure actors and their pushy agents.
And while Broderick ultimately landed the role of Phillipe Gaston in Ladyhawke, McCarthy came out on top in 1985. Two months after Ladyhawke opened, McCarthy hit the big screen in St. Elmo’s Fire.
