RIO LINDA –
Detectives from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the context of a stash of weapons, explosives and much more found near 24th Street and E Street in Rio Linda on Friday evening.
Friday, the Sheriff’s Department received information from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office with evidence suggesting that illegal weapons were in the property in Rio Linda.
The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department received consent from the owner of the property to search the area. Over the next several hours, detectives discovered four assault rifles, a shotgun, a rifle and five handguns on the property. Two of the rifles and one of the handguns were equipped with silencers.
In addition, twenty high-capacity magazines, 20,000-30,000 rounds of ammunition, several passports, and over $30,000 in cash were seized.
Detectives also discovered several explosive materials, including two jars of tannerite, several jars of black powder, a pipe bomb and numerous cricket bombs at the scene. A cell phone, which had been converted into a detonation remote, was also found.
Bomb squads from the Sheriff’s Department and the FBI detonated all explosives at the scene.
The items seized by officers are believed to belong to a man living on the property. That man is currently in the Placer County Jail.
Sheriff’s detectives and federal law enforcement are currently investigating the motive behind the possession of the items. The investigation is ongoing.
