MUMBAI – Fox Star Studios India will partner with Phantom Films to produce Anurag Kashyap’s next film, Bombay Velvet. The film, which stars top actor Ranbir Kapoor and actress Anushka Sharma, will begin shooting in July and will release worldwide on December 25, 2014. Kapoor recently starred in Disney-UTV’s Barfi! which was India’s entry to the 2013 Oscars.
The first installment of a planned trilogy, Bombay Velvet is the story of how the city (now called Mumbai) became a metropolis, set against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz, spanning from the 50s to the early 70s.

“Bombay Velvet is my first film in a trilogy about Bombay, before it became a metropolis. It’s a story that has always fascinated me and we have been developing it for about four years, and I am very excited that now its fully ready and we begin shoot this year,” said Kashyap whose latest directorial outing Ugly just screened at Cannes. Kashyap is also at Cannes as part of the Bombay Talkies ensemble project which features shorts by three other leading directors – Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee. In addition, Kashyap has coproduced two other Cannes titles – Amit Kumar’s Monsoon Shootout and Ritesh Batra‘s Lunchbox.
Phantom Films was launched in 2011 by Kashyap along with director Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan), producer Madhu Mantena (Ghajini) and Vikas Bahl, the former head of Disney-UTV India’s alternative banner UTV Spotboy Films.
“Bombay Velvet is intricately researched and beautifully fictionalized by Anurag as to how one of the greatest cities of the world was created amidst loads of action, romance, pain and huge drama. We are looking forward to working together with Fox Star to create a phenomenal cinematic experience of this story for the big screen,” said Bahl.
“We are delighted to partner with Anurag on his next directorial venture Bombay Velvet. One of the best storytellers we have today, Anurag will bring alive Bombay in its original glory. What will make this cinematic journey unique will be the presence of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as the lead protagonists. For us at Fox Star, Bombay Velvet is yet another example of high concept cinema that we want to be known for,” added Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh.
FSS’ upcoming projects include a Bollywood version of the Tom Cruise–Cameron Diaz starrer Knight And Day. Titled Bang Bang, the Siddharth Anand-directed film will star top Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan and actress Katrina Kaif and is scheduled for release next year.
