SACRAMENTO-

So far, there have been two deaths in the Black Forest Fire ripping through Colorado Springs right now.

“Several fatalities already, it goes to show you how dynamic fire can be and how dangerous it can be as well,” said Daniel Berlant, with Cal Fire.

Cal Fire says most civilian wildfire deaths happen because people don’t evacuate – they try to protect their homes armed with a garden hose.

“All too often, residents think they can just wait out or even get up on the roof and maybe hose it down. That does very little to actually protect your home. All it really does is take water supply away from us,” said Berlant.

The time wasted spraying off your home and lawn could cost you your life.

“Then they get on the roadway. The smoke the visibility is very difficult and we are trying to get our resources in. We don’t drive little Mini Coopers we are driving large fire engines, bull dozers. We don’t need the extra vehicles on the roadway,” said Berlant.

Cal Fire started Ready, Set, Go to help people remember how to prepare. Ready – create defensible space. Set – know what you are going to grab if you have to run from your home. Go – when the evacuation order comes in get out of the area immediately.
