Weeks after ABC Family canceled Bunheads and The Lying Game, the cable network has gone ahead and shored up the bulk of its programming slate.
Switched at Birth has been renewed for a third season, while more episodes of freshman summer dramas The Fosters and Twisted have been ordered for their first seasons, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
All three series will return in January 2014, along with ABC Family’s veteran series Pretty Little Liars.
The Lying Game creator Charles Pratt Jr. will join the Twisted writing and producing team as an executive producer for the back half of the order.
“ABC Family has always been a home for groundbreaking storytelling with iconic characters and families, and we’re thrilled to have The Fosters and Twisted join our lineup as breakout summer hits,” said Michael Riley, president of ABC Family. “We are very proud of the original series we continue to foster, bringing real and relatable characters to life for our viewers and know they are destined to become part of the zeitgeist alongside Switched at Birth and Pretty Little Liars.”
The Fosters has set series highs with each new broadcast — one of its recent episodes ranked as Monday’s top scripted-TV telecast among women 12-34 and was No. 2 among women 18-34 and viewers 12-34. Twisted opened to 1.6 million viewers, benefiting from the massive return for ABC Family’s signature series Pretty Little Liars.
The drama pickups join other ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars, Ravenswood, Chasing Life, Melissa and Joey and Baby Daddy.
