COLOGNE, Germany — Lars von Trier and his production company Zentropa Entertainment continue to tease salivating fans with sneak, not-too-revealing, peeks at von Trier’s upcoming erotic epic, Nymphomaniac.
On Thursday, Zentropa unveiled its first teaser poster for the two-part drama starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard and Shia LaBeouf: a black-and-white image that evokes female sexuality with the tag line: “Forget About Love.”

Zentropa has crafted a careful, studio-level campaign for Nymphomaniac, which is planned as two full-length dramas and will be released in both hard- and soft-core versions. The poster kicks off what Zentropa says will be an eight-month campaign aimed at enticing fans with a steady stream of materials online. The group has set up a website — www.nymphomaniacthemovie.com — but so far, it only contains the poster and a request to “come back May 16” when, one supposes, Zentropa will release the first trailer for the film.
Describing the image, Phillip Einstein Lipski and Maria Biilmann, who developed and designed the Nymphomaniac campaign, said they tried to “distill the intimacy and the obscenity of the film down to its simplest form. A form we hope will engage the audience in the universe of Nymphomaniac — one sexy piece of artwork at a time”.
Until now, Zentropa has put out just two official photos from Nymphomaniac, which features an all-star supporting cast including Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe and Connie Nielsen, among many others. The film’s plot is described as the erotic history of a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac (Gainsbourg), who recounts the story of her sexual life to an older man (Skarsgard) after he saves her after a beating.

Von Trier apparently did not submit the first half of Nymphomaniac to Cannes because it wasn’t finished. The Danish director was declared persona non grata and banned from the festival two years ago after making a poorly received joke about Hitler at the Cannes press conference for his last feature, Melancholia. But in a remarkable, not to say convenient, turnaround, Cannes Artistic Director Thierry Fremaux has “clarified” that the ban was only for one year and that von Trier would be welcomed back.
One big question is whether Nymphomaniac, part 1, will now land in Venice or at the Toronto Film Festival for its world premiere.
What is certain is that the feature will still be a hot item in the Cannes market. TrustNordisk, who are handling world sales, have locked up much of the world, pre-selling Nymphomaniac to the U.S. (Magnolia), Canada (Mongrel Media), Germany (Concorde), France (Les Films du Losange), U.K/Ireland (Artificial Eye) and Russia (Central Partnership), among many other territories, but will be making the final push at this year’s Marche du Film.
