On Saturday, Joss Whedon brought Comic-Con’s mammoth Hall H to its metaphorical knees by announcing that the full title of the second Avengers movie was actually The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But with the title prompting all manner of fan speculation, Whedon has started revealing more about what to expect from the movie — or, to be specific, what not to expect.
“A lot of people, because we called it ‘Age of Ultron’ and there was a [comic] book [called] ‘Age of Ultron’ just recently, assumed that was the storyline we’re doing, which is not the case,” Whedon said during a live webcast from Marvel’s Comic-Con booth this weekend (Archived here). “We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron.”

Whedon went on to say that Hank Pym, the character who created genocidal robot Ultron in the original comic books, would be absent from the movie version — Likely because he’ll be busy in Edgar Wright‘s long-promised Ant-Man movie — but that instead the movie is “crafting our own version of [the origin], where his origin comes more from the Avengers we already know about.”
He also revealed that he’d wanted to use Ultron even before he signed on for the first movie, in part because the character was “the chief villain when I read the book. He’s been the Avengers villain for so long, I was amazed anyone was surprised it would be him in the movie.”
Production on the movie will begin “end of February, beginning of March,” Whedon said, with shooting taking place in London. The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released May 2015.
