Jimmy Fallon will present Justin Timberlake with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the MTV Video Music Awards, taking place Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Fallon and Timberlake’s partnership dates all the way back to the 2002 VMAs, when Fallon hosted and Timberlake was a performer. It was on 2003’s Saturday Night Live that they became an unlikely comedy duo when they took part in what would become a recurring SNL sketch, The Barry Gibbs Talk Show.
When Fallon launched his NBC late-night talker on March 2, 2009, Timberlake was a guest on his first show and established the viral “History of Rap” series. Late Night also set aside an entire week for Timberlake in March ahead of his new album’s release.
Earlier this month, MTV announced that Timberlake would take the stage as a performer and receive the Video Vanguard Award. The last recipient to receive that award was Britney Spears in 2011.
There is speculation that Timberlake and his former ‘N Sync bandmates will reunite at the VMAs, with Lance Bass saying in a SiriusXM interview: “It’s amazing to see the reaction out there on Twitter and social media [and] how many people are supporting ‘N Sync. It’s so nice to see because when we ended things [over] 10 years ago, there was no social media, there was no Twitter, but it’s so cute to see how many people are supporting [us], and ‘N Sync was even trending.”
Timberlake, who just wrapped the joint Legends of the Summer stadium trek with Jay Z, will release The 20/20 Experience – Part 2 on Sept. 30 before embarking on a North America tour beginning Oct. 31. His next theatrical endeavor, Runner, Runner, co-starring Ben Affleck, is slated for theatrical release Sept. 27.
