TORONTO – A cash-strapped CBC has acquired the foreign import Crossing Lines crime drama set in exotic European locations.
The series comes from Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero’s production shingle and Munich-based Tandem Communications.
The French-German co-production co-stars Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, and was earlier acquired by NBC for the U.S. market.
Crossing Lines portrays a special unit of crime investigators working with the International Criminal Court in the Hague to hunt down global criminals across European borders.
The series’ international cast includes William Fichtner, who plays a disgraced American cop, Gabriella Pession, Richard Flood and Marc Lavoine.
Government subsidy cuts to the public broadcaster have led the CBC to increasingly rely on new European costume dramas and returning Canadian fare for prime time ratings.
The CBC last year acquired Titanic: Blood & Steel for its Fall 2012 schedule.
