This story first appeared in the Aug. 16 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
Larry David has a habit of referencing people he knows in Curb Your Enthusiasm and, now, in his first HBO movie, Clear History, out Aug. 10.
A valuable painting his character owns and loves — of a shopping cart — constantly is referred to as “a Plepler,” named for HBO CEO Richard Plepler. “It was more that it’s a funny-sounding name,” explained David to THR at the July 31 L.A. premiere.
Plepler said he only had a hint this was coming but added affectionately, “We love Larry — he can do anything he wants.”
Meanwhile, a faux Plepler mounted at the party sneakily was stolen from a wall, right under David’s nose. “Why would anyone want that?” he asked upon hearing it was pinched. “Maybe it’s a PR stunt.”
