Winter is coming to the Marvel Universe… Well, almost.
Marvel Entertainment has today confirmed long-standing rumors that it will launch a new series featuring the Fantastic Four supporting characters the Inhumans that editor-in-chief Axel Alonso likens to Game of Thrones.
Inhuman was described by writer Matt Fraction (Also the writer of the New York Times best-selling Hawkeye) as “a superhero story and a mythical story, all revolving around turning the world into a world full of superheroes” that is “about race, gender, sexual equality.” He told Entertainment Weekly that the series is “giving us a chance to get back to a classic Marvel metaphor of alienation… It’s a very relevant, pertinent metaphor.”
The new series spins out of an upcoming storyline called “Inhumanity,” in which millions of regular people around the world discover that they are not only descended from the genetically-modified Inhumans – In the Marvel Universe, the Inhumans started out as regular humans experimented on by aliens. It’s comics; just go with it – but, because of their lineage, also have super-powers all of a sudden.

Oddly enough, the promotion art by Steve McNiven provided by Marvel to Entertainment Weekly appears to spoil at least three major upcoming plot points in various Marvel comics – Wolverine’s presence would tend to suggest that he does not, as teased, die in his upcoming “Killable” storyline, while the appearance of Spider-Man in his original costume would appear to predict a return for Peter Parker to the role after a year of Otto Octavius as Superior Spider-Man. Meanwhile, X-Men fans might be surprised by Nightcrawler showing up in the back of the image, considering that he’s been dead for years…
“The effects on the Marvel Universe will be seismic,” EiC Alonso promised in reference to “Inhumanity” (It’s turning out to be a rough year for the Marvel Universe; “Inhumanity” will be the fourth such major event for Marvel this year, after “Age of Ultron,” “Infinity,” and the X-Men 50th anniversary storyline “Battle of The Atom”), while Fraction said that the new influx of Inhumans will fracture current Inhuman society into fractions preparing for war. “Once [their] city falls, all kinds of bigger things start happening,” he teased. “We’re turning the entire Marvel Universe into a potential battlefield.”
Inhuman launches in December.
