If you were left somewhat confused by the revelations of Star Trek Into Darkness‘ main villain, help is at hand as IDW Publishing teams with screenwriter Roberto Orci and comic creators Mike Johnson and Claudia Balboni for a mini-series that’ll fill in some of the gaps in the movie’s backstory.
Warning: This story will spoil both big reveals of Star Trek Into Darkness. If you still haven’t seen the movie yet want to stay ignorant of its secrets, do not read any further. You have been warned.
Announced today ahead of next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Star Trek: Khan series will be written by Johnson with oversight by Orci, and illustrated by Balboni. “We’re traveling back in time to show Khan’s rise to power and give fans their first look at the legendary Eugenics Wars,” Johnson explained. “As the series unfolds we will see the events that led to Khan leaving Earth aboard the Botany Bay, and then jump forward to witness his awakening in the future by Admiral Marcus.”

This isn’t Johnson’s first time creating backstory for a Trek movie; in addition to writing the ongoing monthly comic book set in the movie continuity, he was responsible for two series book-ending the release of 2009’s Star Trek (Star Trek: Countdown and Star Trek: Nero), as well as Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness, a prologue for this summer’s big screen adventure.
The six-issue Star Trek: Khan begins in October.
