Could YOU be Plastic Free for an Entire Month?

There is an organization in Australia that is challenging businesses and individuals to pledge to use use ANY single use plastic for the entire month of July.

"Think about it. Why would you make something that you're going to use for a few minutes out of a material that's basically going to last forever, and you're just going to throw it away. What's up with that?"
                                                  -Jeb Berrier, BagIt Movie

As you know, we try very hard to minimize our single use plastic consumption in our household.  But We are still not to zero.  I think we will take this challenge.

There is an awesome website by the people organizing the Plastic Free July.  It has loads of ideas on how to go plastic free.   Beth Terry, of My Plastic Free Life also has a lot of great ideas on how to reduce your plastic consumption.

Since we just got a dog, I especially liked these ideas to reduce plastic waste as it relates to to our four legged friend.

The hardest is for us to stop is waste from food consumption.... it is flat out difficult to get food not wrapped in plastic.  We will just have to be faithful about making items from scratch,  if we can't buy it prepackaged.  Sometime when life gets busy we have been cheating, so this is a good reminder to stay true to our goal of zero waste.

Finally... if you do get a plastic shopping bag, or plastic film around a packaged item, please be sure to take it for recycling.  You can deposit them in front of your local grocery stores here in California.  For more information, look here.

So our family is taking the Plastic Free in July Challenge, Who's with us?!

Think the challenge is too hard?  You can even opt to just avoid the top four priority plastics for this challenge; plastics: straws, plastic bottles, plastic bags and plastic drink lids.
