Pirelli, the Italian tire manufacturer, has lent its support to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, becoming one of the project’s founding supporters after serving as one of the sponsors of last month’s inaugural celebration at the May Company building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ new museum is scheduled to open in 2017.
“We are proud to support the Academy in its efforts to preserve and celebrate motion pictures. The Pirelli brand is founded on excellence in design and innovation, and to join the journey that [architect] Renzo Piano so eloquently envisions for the facility is an honor,” Paolo Ferrari, chairman and CEO of Pirelli’s NAFTA Region, said. “Mr. Piano recently collaborated with Pirelli on our facility in Settimo, which is the most efficient and technologically advanced of the Pirelli group in terms of product innovation, productive processes, attention to sustainability and the quality of the working environment. Partnering with the Academy is an opportunity that we look forward to being part of as we look to grow our footprint in North America.”
Commented Bill Kramer, the Academy’s managing director of development: “The Academy Museum will celebrate the movie industry by sharing its heritage and future with people of all ages from around the world. Pirelli has a deep commitment to excellence in design, photography and film. We are delighted to have them join us as an active partner in this vital project.”
Founded in 1872, Pirelli is the fifth largest tire manufacturer in the world in terms of sales. Operating in more than 160 countries, it has 22 manufacturing sites and employs about 36,000 people around the world. Pirelli is the exclusive supplier of the Superbike world championship, many single marque championships around the world and the sole supplier for the Formula 1 championship for 2011-13.
