The Church of Scientology is speaking out against former member Leah Remini, calling the King of Queens star’s filing on Thursday of a missing person report for Shelly Miscavige, wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, an act of “ludicrous self-promotion.”

Scientology writer Tony Ortega has previously reported on his website, The Underground Bunker, that Shelly has not been publicly seen in six years. Later in the day, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that the missing person report was “ruled as unfounded,” but would not provide further details as to Mrs. Miscavige’s whereabouts or well-being.
Ortega later reported that an LAPD official told him police had “made contact” with the leader’s wife and called the case “unfounded.”
“The Los Angeles Police Department has already stated that the case is closed and that the report filed by Leah Remini was unfounded,” a statement from the church provided to The Hollywood Reporter reads.

“This ill-advised, ludicrous self-promotion, and the media inquiries it generated caused an inexcusable distraction for the LAPD in an era when the time and resources of its officers are stretched thin each day,” the statement continues.
It goes on: “Creating this unnecessary burden for law enforcement was even more irresponsible given the entire episode was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini, cooked up with unemployed, anti-religious zealots, such as Tony Ortega, who blog on the fringe of the Internet.”

“Sadly, rather than move on with her life and career, Ms. Remini has aligned herself with a handful of untrustworthy, lunatic tabloid sources who obsessively harass the church to advance their selfish agendas,” it ends.
