The Weinstein Company is making more moves in scripted television. The production and distribution house has acquired the rights to Daniel Stashower’s The Hour of Peril. TWC is eyeing the New York Times best-seller, published earlier in 2013, as a TV miniseries.
The Hour of Peril, a historical thriller, tells the true story of detectives Allan Pinkerton and Kate Warne and their race to detect and prevent a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in the time between his election and inauguration. Brendan Deneen and Charles Spicer are attached to executive produce for Macmillan Films
“Daniel Stashower’s The Hour of Peril is an untold and landmark moment in American history with the suspense and fervor of a crime thriller, which will make for immensely captivating television,” said TWC president of television Meryl Poster.
Broadcast and cable networks are lapping up miniseries of late, with a wave of high-profile “limited” and “event” entries in the genre coming on the heels of 2012’s Hatfields & McCoys on History. TWC previously saw success in the limited arena with Anthony Minghella‘s HBO adaptation of book series The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
Though TWC has had several scripted efforts in development since making a big push in TV since the 2011 hiring of Poster, the unscripted arena remains its area of greatest success, with reality franchises such as Project Runway and Mob Wives.
