Talk about a blast from the past.
Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park 3D dominated the global box office over the weekend with $30 million in ticket sales, including a $28.8 million debut in China. The strength of the Universal release in that market underscores the voracious appetite for 3D fare among Chinese moviegoers, even as 3D re-releases struggle in other parts of the world (last year, Titanic 3D racked up $150 million in China).
Jurassic Park 3D earned $45.4 million earlier this year in North America; its international total is now $44.5 million for a global total of $89.9 million.

Universal had another big reason to celebrate as Despicable Me 2 crossed the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office, becoming the top grossing film of the year so far behind Iron Man 3 ($1.5 billion). Through Sunday, the animated tentpole has earned $455.1 million internationally and $350.7 million domestically for a total $805.8 million. It’s the second most successful film in Universal history behind — that’s right — Jurassic Park ($921.6 million).
Coming in No. 2 for the weekend at the global box office was Sony’s Elysium, which earned $20 million overseas and $7.1 million in North America for total ticket sales of $27.1 million. Neill Blomkamp‘s Matt Damon and Jodie Foster sci-fi epic has earned a total $139.1 million through Sunday.
Young-adult sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters came in No. 3 with ticket sales of $23.6 million, including $18.4 million internationally and $5.2 million domestically for a worldwide cume of $110.9 million.
New Line’s sleeper hit We’re the Millers jumped the $100 million mark worldwide, earning $13.5 million in North America and $8.3 million internationally for total weekend ticket sales of $21.8 million and a lifetime cume of $114.7 million. The R-rated comedy, starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston, placed No. 4 in terms of global weekend ticket sales.

Elsewhere, magician heist pic Now You See Me continued its dazzling run, grossing $12.5 million internationally and pushing the film’s worldwide total to $293 million.
Hugh Jackman starrer The Wolverine jumped the $350 million mark worldwide, grossing $5.2 million overseas for the weekend and $2.5 million in North America. The 20th Century Fox tentpole has now earned $352.3 million globally.
