CBS announced Wednesday that it has promoted Glenn Geller to head of current programming as David Brownfield exits the network for a development deal with CBS Television Studios. The move also sees CBS merging current programming operations at both the network and the studio.
Geller had previously served CBS as director and vp of current programming at the network before moving over to CBS Television Studios as senior vp of current programming in 2006. His new role as executive vp of current programming at CBS Network Television Entertainment Group will find him supporting both CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, consolidating his and Brownfield’s previous jobs into one.

“The timing is right to make this move,” said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler and CBS Television Studios president David Stapf in a joint statement. “David [Brownfield] has wanted to return to writing and producing television, and the majority of our series are now produced in-house. It makes sense creatively and operationally to have one streamlined current operation to support our shows.”
Geller’s expanded jurisdiction will have him overseeing creative affairs for all scripted series at the network and for all of the studio’s shows produced for CBS and other networks. Other networks have previously merged with studio operations, like ABC did in 2009.
“Glenn is a gifted executive with smart creative instincts, deft diplomacy skills and strategic programming savvy,” added Stapf and Tassler. “He is well-liked and respected by creative talent and executives alike, and adds great insight and value to any project he touches.”

Brownfield, who joined CBS Entertainment in 2001 as director and ultimately senior vp of current programming, will remain on the network’s Studio City lot where he will begin working on development for the 2014-15 broadcast season.
“David is a valued member of a winning team here,” said Tassler and Stapf. “He’s a very skilled creative talent, and we’re excited that he’ll still be in our halls and developing new projects.”
Brownfield’s previous TV efforts include a stint as co-producer and writer on ABC’s Boy Meets World. Prior to joining CBS, Geller clocked three years at 20th Century Fox Television, where he worked on The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
