Katherine Oliver, commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, will be honored with an industry tribute at the 23rd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City on Dec. 2, it was announced Wednesday.
The award is given to a career veteran who has significantly influenced the motion picture industry. Oliver oversees all film, TV and digital production in New York City. Under Oliver’s leadership, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has created various initiatives to make shooting in New York more cost effective.
She has also developed educational programs, including the “Made in NY” Production Assistant Training Program. More recently, she’s worked to attract new startups to the city and encourage the development of existing New York tech companies.

“We are honored to dedicate our 2013 Gotham Industry Tribute to Katherine Oliver, who has made an indelible impact in the entertainment industry in New York City and beyond,” Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmaker Project, which presents the Gotham Awards, said in a statement. “Through her work, she has supported the production of thousands of film, TV, and digital projects, furthermore bolstering the community of filmmakers and digital content creators in New York City. A true Gotham native, Katherine embodies an impressive breadth of work and a long list of achievements that we are proud to celebrate.”
Prior to her appointment as commissioner, Oliver was general manager of Bloomberg Radio and Televison and worked as a radio and television journalist.
Oliver joins an illustrious list of past honorees, including Participant’s Jeff Skoll, Tom Rothman, Focus Features CEO James Schamus and Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
Nominees for this year’s Gotham Awards will be announced on October 24 and winners will be honored on December 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan.
