Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment snagged the top spot on both national sales charts with Epic, an animated feature that earned $107.4 million in theaters.
The film, which features the vocal talents of Amanda Seyfried, Beyonce Knowles, Josh Hutcherson and others, debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart, both for the week ending Aug. 25.
The film generated 40 percent of its overall unit sales from the high-definition format, a high percentage for a family title.
Epic pushed the prior week’s top seller, Sony Pictures’ Olympus Has Fallen, to No. 2 on both sales charts.
On First Alert, two more new releases, Millennium Entertainment’s Killing Season — an actioner with Robert De Niro and John Travolta that had only a limited theatrical release — and Anchor Bay Entertainment’s horror-movie spoof Scary Movie V (which mustered a so-so $32 million in U.S. theaters) debuted at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, with sophomore Oblivion, from Universal Studios, dropping from No. 2 the prior week to No. 5.
On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Oblivion slipped only one notch, from No. 2 to No. 3, followed at No. 4 by Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Killing Season, which generated just 25 percent of its first-week sales from the high-definition format, bowed at No. 5, while Scary Movie V (26 percent Blu-ray Disc) bowed at No. 6.

Several TV shows fared well among DVD and Blu-ray Disc buyers. NCIS: The Tenth Season, from Paramount, debuted at No. 7 on the First Alert sales chart. Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season, from HBO Home Entertainment, bowed at No. 12 on First Alert and No. 7 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. And season three of Duck Dynasty remained in the First Alert top 10 for the third consecutive week, finishing at No. 9, down from No. 5 the previous week.
In rental stores, Olympus Has Fallen was No. 1 again, with 42, from Warner, also repeating at No. 2 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart. Scary Movie V debuted at No. 3, and Killing Season bowed at No. 8.
Epic was a no-show on Home Media Magazine’s top 20 rentals chart due to 20th Century Fox’s policy of holding back new releases for 28 days from key rental outlets Netflix and Redbox.
