Anchor Bay Films has acquired North American rights to Joel Surnow‘s feature directorial debut Small Time.
Starring Christopher Meloni (42, Law & Order: SVU), Bridget Moynahan (Blue Bloods) and Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), the film also was written by Surnow, the co-creator of the Fox series 24.
Small Time is loosely based on Surnow’s real-life experiences and “has been a labor of love for everyone who worked on it,” he said.
Shot in 20 days in and around Los Angeles, Small Time chronicles the story of Al Klein, the owner of a used car lot who is at a crossroad in his life. He still pines for his ex-wife, Barbara; his business partner, Ash Martini, is a good-time Charlie who refuses to grow up; and his son, Freddy, has just graduated high school. Klein’s life gets thrown into a tailspin when Freddy announces he wants to pass on college and move in with dad so he can become a salesman at the car lot.
Small Time co-stars Devon Bostick, Xander Berkeley and Kevin Nealon.
“Small Time is a real gem for us, and we’re really looking forward to working with Joel,” said Kevin Kasha, executive vp acquisitions and co-productions at Anchor Bay. “The team loves this film and we are excited to be distributing it.”
Surnow co-wrote and produced the Reelz miniseries The Kennedys, which was nominated for 10 Emmy Awards.
Small Time is an Asylum Entertainment production produced by K.C. Warnke. Stan E. Hubbard, Jonathan Koch, Steve Michaels, Lawrence Rogow and Colleen Surnow executive produced the film.
Paradigm negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
