Now that director Steven Soderbergh has taken a sabbatical from filmmaking, he can spend his time supporting other directors, like Spike Lee.
Soderbergh pledged $10,000 to Lee’s Kickstarter campaign for his next film, unveiled Monday, an amount that entitles him to dinner and courtside seats at a Knicks game with Lee.
Lee confirmed Soderbergh’s pledge and the filmmakers’ night out in an interview with MTV’s movies blog, NextMovie.

“I’m taking him to dinner and we’re going to the game together,” Lee told NextMovie. “I don’t even know if he likes sports! So I’m gonna pick the game for him. But I’m giving a huge shout-out to my man Steven Soderbergh for the support, and I’m really humbled with Steven coming on board and doing that. Thank you, Steven.”
The directors have been friends since 1989 when they both had movies at the Cannes Film Festival, Lee explained.

So far, 658 people have donated to Lee’s Kickstarter campaign, including three at the maximum, $10,000 level.
He’s raised $102,286 of his $1.25 million goal, which he has until Aug. 21 to reach.
Lee said he assumed the other big spenders were “finance guys.”
