The fast-paced action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, scored a rare triple play on the national home video charts for the week ending Aug. 18, topping both sales charts as well as the rental charts its first week in stores.
The film, about a disgraced former Secret Service agent who winds up rescuing the president from a terrorist attack on the White House, earned $98.9 million in theaters. It debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart – as well as Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart.
Also making a strong showing its first week in stores was The Big Wedding, a comedy from Lionsgate that earned $21.8 million in U.S. theaters. With a cast headed by Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton and Katherine Heigl, the film bowed at No. 3 on both the First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, and at No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, even though the film only generated 16 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray.
Olympus Has Fallen, in contrast, generated 45 percent of its unit sales from Blu-ray.
The Tom Cruise actioner Oblivion, from Universal Studios, slipped to No. 2 on both sales charts after bowing at No. 1 the previous week. It’s not yet available at Netflix and Redbox due to Universal’s 28-day holdback policy, so the film, which grossed $89 million in U.S. theaters, again failed to make the rental chart’s top 20.
Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped from No. 2 on both sales charts the previous week to No. 4 on First Alert and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. And on the rental chart, the latest cinematic exploits of the iconic action figure vacated the No. 1 spot after two weeks and slipped to No. 4.
Rounding out the top five on the First Alert sales chart is season three of the A&E series Duck Dynasty, which slipped from No. 4 the previous week.
On both the Blu-ray Disc sales chart and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, the No. 5 spot went to Lionsgate’s Mud, with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon — down from No. 3 the prior week.
The Jackie Robinson biopic 42, from Warner, snagged the No. 2 spot on the rental chart now that its 28-day holdback from select rental outlets is over.
