The Voice has had its first weekly double elimination, but, as Carson Daly announced at the beginning of the broadcast, all eliminated top-12 singers will get a chance to rejoin the competition as a fan-voted, fourth “wild card” finalist.
Even more so, whoever escapes the night’s cuts will be able to learn from a new crop of guest mentors next week: Diana Ross, Colbie Caillat, Meghan Trainor and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.

After a handful of performances — THR cover star Gwen Stefani and her team on Jamaican-rooted track “The Tide Is High,” made famous by Blondie, Blake Shelton and his three on Elton John‘s “Sad Songs,” and British artist Ella Henderson — the bottom three were revealed. And America’s votes were consistent: All three of the contestants on the chopping block were coaches’ saves from the previous week (an ironic result, given the announcement of the wild card opportunity just minutes before. … Will that singer actually soar for the win on that ultimate second chance?).
The three singers with the lowest number of viewer votes on their Monday night performances were challenged to perform for the #InstantSave, which has audiences at home voting during a fragile five-minute window (via Twitter or the Voice app) to keep one of endangered singers in the competition. Team Blake’s Jessie Pitts opted for Sara Bareilles‘ stripped-down ballad “Gravity,” Pharrell Williams‘ Sugar Joans went for the untouchable Whitney Houston (go big or go home, right) with the many big notes of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and Team Gwen’s Ryan Sill shot for audience’s sensitive side on Extreme’s “More Than Words.”

Following a commercial break complete with newly visible progress bars, Daly announced that America saved Sill, sending Pitts and Joans home.
