A bus driver has been convicted on charges that he took advantage of a mentally disabled woman, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Thomas Vukodinovich, 74, had been a bus driver for Yolo Employment Services since 2005, driving mentally disabled people.

The woman Vukodinovich was convicted of sex crimes against was one of the people he drove. She is said to be moderately mentally disabled, leaving her legally unable to give consent to sex.

Suspicion around Vukodinovich was raised when, back in June 2012, some Winters residents saw his bus often parked near Main Street. They also reported seeing Vukodinovich and the woman having some “unusual physical contact,” according to a release from the DA’s office.

After alerting the woman’s family, Winters Police opened up a criminal investigation into Vukodinovich.

The woman was able to tell professionals at the Yolo County Multi-Disciplinary Center that she had been raped by Vukodinovich on his bus.

Vukodinovich is said to have admitted to raping the woman numerous times on the bus since 2009, the DA’s office noted.

Vukodinovich was convicted on multiple rape, attempted rape and other sexual charges back on August 8. His sentencing will come soon, where he faces up to 27 years in prison.
