Mother Monster is back.
Lady Gaga is the first performer to be announced for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, slated for Aug. 25 in Brooklyn. The pop superstar will perform the first, as-yet untitled single off her forthcoming album ARTPOP.
The performance marks Gaga’s first since undergoing hip surgery earlier this year. In February, the 27-year-old (nee: Stefani Germanotta) was forced to cancel the remaining tour dates of her Born This Way Ball after suffering a labral tear in her right hip.

In recent years, Gaga has provided some of the most talked-about VMA moments with her shocking, over-the-top performances. The singer memorably doused herself in faux blood for a live rendition of “Paparazzi” and later gave a gender-bending performance as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone, for “You and I.” Since 2009, Gaga has brought home a whopping 13 Moonmen, including Best New Artist, Video of the Year for “Bad Romance” and Best Video With a Message for “Born This Way.”
MTV announced the news on Thursday via its various social media platforms, with MTV News’ Sway Calloway reporting live from the Brooklyn Promenade as part of the network’s #RoadToTheVMAs campaign.
The 2013 Video Music Awards will be broadcast live on Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, with a tape-delayed broadcast for the West Coast.
Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis lead this year’s pack of VMA nominees with six apiece. Bruno Mars is up for four awards while Pink, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus and Thirty Seconds to Mars are all up for three each.
