CBS isn’t the only one claiming it is owed money for the live event Fashion Rocks. Weeks after the broadcaster’s multimillion-dollar lawsuit, the Barclays Center, the New York City arena where the event was staged, has sued the event’s producer alleging $1.3 million in unpaid debts.
The complaint filed Thursday claims that Three Lions Entertainment entered into an agreement to rent the arena for the Ryan Seacrest-hosted bash, which was designed to bring fashion and music together and featured performances by Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull. The bill Three Lions owed the arena came to almost $2 million, which was offset by about $600,000 in ticket sales to the Sept. 9 show, according to the complaint.
The arena’s management has not received a cent of the $1.3 million balance, the complaint claims. But Three Lions, which is run by Richard Beckman (a former chief executive of The Hollywood Reporter publisher Prometheus Global Media) and Greenberg Traurig partner Joel Katz, allegedly does not dispute the amount the arena claims it’s owed.
Instead, when sent the bill, CEO Beckman is said to have admitted the company doesn’t have the money to pay the bill.
It’s likely Three Lions is in the process of being liquidated. The Barclays Center’s complaint claims that the same day the news of the broadcaster’s lawsuit was reported, the arena’s management received an email from a purported “Liquidating Trustee” for Three Lions confirming that the company owed $1.3 million but does not have the funds. CBS, which aired the event to poor ratings, claims Beckman said in a phone conversation that the company is “insolvent.”
Neither Katz nor Beckman was immediately available for comment.
