TUOLUMNE COUNTY—

Cal Fire announced Wednesday night that containment of the Rim Fire has shot up to 30%.

The progress in containment was, in part, due to firing operations near Tuolumne City, Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant noted.

Still, over 5,506 structures – including 4,500 homes – remained threatened by the now 192,466 acre fire.

Mandatory evacuations are still in effect for homes north of Old Yosemite Road. Over 100 structures have been destroyed by the fire, including 11 homes.

With Wednesday’s growth, the Rim Fire has moved up to the 6th largest wildfire in California’s history.

Over 4,500 firefighters are battling the inferno.
