BBC One has added Doctor Who star Jenna-Louise Coleman and others to the cast of Death Comes to Pemberley, a suspense drama based on the P.D. James novel that revisits classic Jane Austen characters.
Coleman will play Lydia Wickham, the sister of Pride and Prejudice protagonist Elizabeth Bennet, who, as previously announced, will be portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin. Last month, Matthew Rhys was cast as Elizabeth’s husband, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Matthew Goode is playing Lydia’s husband, George Wickham.
Death Comes to Pemberley is set up as a three-part drama that starts six years into the Bennet-Darcy marriage. It revolves around a murder investigation that starts at the couple’s annual ball.
Casting additions announced on Tuesday also include Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead), James Fleet (Sense and Sensibility), Rebecca Front (The Thick of It), Penelope Keith (To the Manor Born), James Norton (Rush), Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It), Eleanor Tomlinson (The White Queen) and Tom Ward (Silent Witness).
Shooting is scheduled to start later this month, with Origin Pictures producing the mini-series. BAFTA-winning director Daniel Percival (Dirty War, Place of Execution) will direct.
The drama was commissioned by controller of BBC drama commissioning Ben Stephenson and former controller of BBC One Danny Cohen, who was recently promoted to the role of director of television.
