HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Memorial Day is a time to enjoy with your family, to appreciate the freedoms we have in this country, and to remember the heroes who shaped this country.

But not all of those heroes are in the military. One of them ran in Huntsville's Annual Cotton Row Run Monday morning. Over 5,000 runners participated in the race but finishing first wasn't the only thing on everyone's mind.

Steve Burcham of Madison is a husband and father of three girls who received devastating news late last year. Doctors told him he needed a heart transplant in order to live.

He was put on a donor's list and in February, he received a new heart. His sister said he broke the record for the fastest release from the hospital in Birmingham after a transplant; which was one week.

Three months later, Burcham joined his dad and brother in this year's Cotton Row Run.

He didn't finish first in the race but he said he was still a winner and doesn't need a medal to prove it.
