FLORENCE, Italy – The Locarno Film Festival announced Thursday it would honor producer, director, and special effects wizard Douglas Trumbull with the event’s first-ever Vision Award, created to honor behind-the-scenes cinema talents.
In addition to presenting Trumbull with the new honor, the officials will organize two Master Class events Trumbull will host, and the festival will screen three of his films: Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, from 1968; Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, from 1977; and Silent Running, the 1972 sci-fi drama Trumbull himself directed.

Trumbull, 71, garnered his first Oscar nomination — for best visual effects — for his work on Close Encounters, and he was nominated two additional times, for Star Trek: The Motion Picture from 1979 and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner from 1982. Trumbull was also honored by the Oscars for Scientific and Engineering achievement in 1993 and given the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for technological contributions to the industry last year.
First-year Locarno artistic director Carlo Chatrian praised Trumbull as a “filmmaker, inventor and creator of visual effects that have haunted audiences’ imaginations” and someone “who has always been ahead of the pack.”
Trumbull will join Georgian filmmaker Otar Iosseliani, German director Werner Herzog, and Italian actor Sergio Castellitto among the festival’s award winners this year. The event will release its full lineup July 17.
The 66th edition of the picturesque Locarno event will run from Aug. 7 to 17.
