Alec Baldwin, David Hyde Pierce, Kathleen Turner, People for the American Way (PFAW) president Michael Keegan and New York City mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio were among those in attendance as Norman Lear kicked off his latest political endeavor last week.
The legendary TV producer launched the Norman Lear Eternal Vigilance Fund, a three-year, $15 million endowment campaign for his PFAW organization, at New York’s Per Se Restaurant on Friday, Sept. 27.
The fund is intended to help fuel the 30-year-old organization’s efforts to mobilize and activate progressive supporters. Founded in 1981 by Lear — along with Barbara Jordan, Andrew Heiskell and others — PFAW is a liberal/progressive advocacy group that aims to “promote the American Way and defend it from attack,” according to a mission statement on its website, and “to build and nurture communities of support for our values, and to equip those communities to promote progressive policies, elect progressive candidates and hold public officials accountable.”
